How Plastic is Poisoning Kids

Synthetic chemicals found in plastic can be absorbed into your body through skin contact. Chemicals like Bisphenol A (BPA), PVCs, PBDE flame retardants, and phthalates have been found to be especially harmful to children.

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) can be found and ingested in food and drink, dust particles, and can even be absorbed through the skin. This chemical has been found to affect even infant-aged children, as most of the toys, teethers, and some of the bottles we give them are made of plastic.

PVC has been found to negatively affect healthy neurobiological development, possibly stunting growth, sex hormones, and hormones linked with satiation, causing obesity in children. It may also cause asthma and other allergic reactions. School-aged children are exposed to PVC through their backpacks and school supplies.

BPA and PBE (polybrominated diphenyl ethers) can also cause obesity and other health problems, as they disrupt the endocrine system in children as well as adults. Scientists have also found evidence that BPA also negatively affects social functioning, causing the isolation epidemic in the USA. 

Other negative impacts plastic has on health include:

  • Enlarged breasts in boys
  • Infertility
  • Miscarriage
  • Low androgen levels in boys
  • Obesity
  • ADHD
  • Hyperactivity
  • Imbalances in estrogen and progesterone in girls
  • Low IQ
  • Asthma

While all this can seem overwhelming, there is hope. Be mindful of your plastic usage and expose your children less to the chemicals in plastic by following a few simple steps.

Make the switch to biodegradable toothbrushes. Eco bundles like this one include bamboo toothbrushes and straws, which greatly decreases the amount of plastic your child’s mouth comes in contact with.


Use beeswax to wrap your child’s lunches. Plastic Tupperware and lunch boxes can be detrimental to your children’s health. Use healthier and long-lasting beeswax to keep his lunches fresh.


Don’t heat your food in plastic. Silicone food bags are much safer for boiling and heating your leftovers and other food in. They’re perfect for meal prepping, packing lunches, and are safe to use in the microwave.


Don’t store your produce in plastic. Use cotton mesh bags instead. BPAs, PBEs, and other chemicals from plastic leech into fresh food. Use the safer, healthier cotton alternative for storage and shopping.

Consider eco baby toys and bottles. There are a few baby shops online and otherwise that carry eco-and-health friendly baby toys and bottles. These shops don’t use plastic, and instead either use silicone or cotton for toys and stuffed animals.
